################################### ACE ISS PRODUCT LOG Prepared by: Steve Cohn ################################### ACE - NOAA DISCOVERER: (ISS1) ---------------------- Data summary 11/15 20Z through 11/17 02Z GENERAL: Large swells SURFACE DATA: Good. Still strong winds (9-13 m/s) from W or WSW SOUNDING - PROFILER COMPARISON: RASS always parallel and slightly warmer than sonde consistent with virtual temperature 11/16 00Z (2258) Direction within 25 deg above 700m; speed: high mode fair, low mode 5 m/s too large. 11/16 06Z (0511) No winds from sonde 11/16 06Z (0642) Direction: Profl good above 800m (15 deg), poor below; profh poor Speed: profl 4-6 m/s too fast (consistent); profh close up to 1 km 11/16 12Z (1110) Direction: both modes rotated by about 20 deg consistently. Speed: profl fair less than 4 m/s; profh poor below 1.5 km, < 3 m/s above 11/16 18Z (1703) Direction: both modes within 25 deg above 500 m; Speed: profl < 3m/s above 700m; profh poorer at all heights PROFILER DATA: Low mode: profiles up to 1.5 to 2.2 km; clutter to 700m High mode: profiles up to 2.7 km, higher sometimes (rain, cloud?); poor below about 1 km. Clutter maybe worse than before due to large swells. RASS: profiles up to 500-700 m High and Low modes sometimes compare well (speed and direction) above 1 to 1.5 km, but very poorly below. Other times they disagree greatly. Inconsistent Profiler speeds and direction do not match sonde speeds as well as we expect. SOUNDING COMMENTS: NOTE: Most soundings have several points near sfc with false high T, Td; probably due to necessary delay betweem data aquisition and true launch. 11/16 00Z (2258): Good data; inversion and drying 900m 11/16 06Z (0511): No winds; terminated at 500 mb.; drying at 1.2 km 11/16 06Z (0642): (second attempt) Good data except winds 1-2 km; drying at 1.2 km 11/16 12Z (1110): Good data; strong inversion 2.2 km; drying 1.9 km 11/16 18Z (1703): Good data, needs cleaning above 200 mb; inversion and drying 1.9 km SITE LOG INFORMATION: Slow to nav lock, but does get it. "stuff is sliding and falling down all around me - it's like a house of cards. i have shored most everything and hopefully all will survive including me" (KK 11Z 11/16) ################################### ACE - CAPE GRIMM: (ISS4) ----------------- Data summary 11/16 20Z through 11/17 14Z GENERAL: Current status: Profiler/RASS inop; Radiosondes working; Sfc working SURFACE DATA: All sensors look good. Prior to 11/17 6Z sfc winds 10 m/s from NE; after variable speed rotating from N SOUNDING - PROFILER WIND COMPARISON: No profiler winds available PROFILER DATA: Profiler still inoperative. Being looked into. SOUNDING COMMENTS: 11/16 18Z (1750): Good data; inversion near 500 m; some cleaning needed 11/17 00Z (2302): Good data; inversion near 400 m; some cleaning needed 11/17 06Z (0510): Good data; inversion near 300 m; missing winds around 8 km, and 10-13 km; surface point for T, Td high. SITE LOG INFORMATION: (summary of relevant TKLOG entries) Profiler problem being worked on - will be at least several days. ########################################################################### NOAA DISCOVERER ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 320 ############## NOAA DISCOVERER ################ ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/16/1995 -- 4/2 total prof915l ---- 11/16/1995 - 48/48 total prof915h ---- 11/16/1995 - 48/48 total rass915 ----- 11/16/1995 - 48/48 total surface_met - 11/16/1995 -- 2/2 ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- CAPE GRIMM ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 320 ############### CAPE GRIMM ################# ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/16/1995 -- 4/2 total prof915l ---- 11/16/1995 - 0/48 total prof915h ---- 11/16/1995 - 0/48 total rass915 ----- 11/16/1995 - 0/48 total surface_met - 11/16/1995 -- 1/2 ------------------------------------- -------------------------------------
