DMS:
Instrumentation fully operational. Concentrations are approximately 1 nM.
DMSP/DMSO:
Samples collected every 8 hours for particulate and dissolved DMSP and DMSO.
Analysis of DMSP to be done every three days.
DMSO samples will be taken back to the US for analysis.
NH4+NH3/pH:
Both seawater pH and NH4+NH3 are under the weather.
CO:
Seawater CO is not operational
NMHC:
Equilibrated Seawater/GC-FID system fully operational.
Butane ~6 ppb; Pentane ~0.4 ppb at 22h GMT.
CO2:
Instrumentation fully operational.
Nitrate/Chlorophyll:
Nitrate concentrations are approximately 13 uM. Seawater
fluorescence is being recorded continuously. Surface seawater
samples are being collected every 4 hours for discrete chlorophyll analysis.
DMS:
Instrumentation fully operational. Concentrations are around 100ppt.
SO2:
Instrumentation fully operational. Concentrations are 5-10ppt.
NH3:
System not yet operational.
CO:
Atmospheric CO measurements fully operational
NMHC:
GC/FID system fully operational. Butane ~200ppt; Pentane ~20ppt (22h GMT).
O3:
Atmospheric O3 fully operational.
Nitrogen oxides and PAN:
no report.
Radon:
Instrumentation fully operational.
CO2:
Instrumentation fully operational.
Solar Radiation:
Solar irradiance spectroradiometer (300-850 nm, 8nm slit
width) fully operational.
Aerosol physics:
Sizing instrumentation fully operational.
Dominant nuclei mode with maximum at 12-15 nm.
Aerosol chemistry:
2-stage and 7-stage impactors currently sampling for time
periods ranging from 24 to 72 hours for IC, total organic carbon, speciated
organics, and gravimetric analysis.
Aerosol optical properties:
Instrumentation (nephelometer and PSAP) fully
operational. Absorption coefficient low.
TDMA-RH:
Fully operational, running at the following dry sizes: 35nm,
50nm, 75nm, and 165nm. Humidities 50% and 90%. Measurements show no
less-hygroscopic peak and the more-hygroscopic peak has an average growth
of 1.70. The growth is slightly dry size dependent.
TDMA-Thermal:
System up. selecting normally 35, 50 and 150 nm to be
heated at 25, 110, 130, & 150deg. C. Added additional 15 nm size due to
some nice ultrafine production which became stronger throughout the day.
The profiling radar, rass, and surface met station are all operating well and taking data. The sounding system is currently experiencing problems acquiring Omega Nav lock depending on the time of day and the position of Discoverer, resulting in no position and wind data and therefore no tracking abilities for the balloon. When no Nav lock is acquired, the balloon can not be launched. So far only the Nov 16 23:00 GMT flight has not been launched.
