SCS sometimes broken. This is hard to determine from the transferred data, so a post-experiment look will be required when we have the raw SCS tape. The surface and profiler wind speed/direction will be wrong during these outages. SURFACE DATA: Good T, RH, P, gauge. Winds fine when SCS correction is working. Winds prior to 0230Z 11/20 are suspect. Data gap: 11/17 2300-2330 Temperature: nice correlation between small T decreases and raingauge, eg at 11/17 0020Z, 1215Z, etc. T break at 11/17 0430, but doesn't look like a front. Sometimes below freezing 11/18 Pressure: P jump at 11/18 2210 (unexplained) Corrected wind - clearly wrong at times (SCS problem), otherwise inconclusive without knowing the ship motion. SOUNDING - PROFILER COMPARISON: RASS generally parallel to and slightly warmer than sonde consistent with virtual temperature Profiler wind directions when "good" is consistently about 20 degrees too small (rotated counter-clockwise) (note direction of errors assume class is correct and refer to radar data) 11/17 12Z (1047): Low mode: poor below 1 km; above within 3 m/s, 30 deg Hi mode: poor below 1 km; above dir within 20 deg, and speed 3-10 m/s low. 11/17 18Z (1657): Low mode: speed 1-3 m/s low, within 25 deg. Hi mode: dir good at all hts, speed 2-5 m/s low 11/18 00Z (????): described in tklog but no file transferred? 11/18 06Z (0448): Low mode: dir within 30 deg; speed good 700m-1km, poor above Hi mode: dir good above 700m; speed never close 11/18 12Z (1102): no sonde winds 11/18 12Z (1127): Low mode: speed 3-6 m/s high, dir within 25 deg Hi mode: speed and direction good at all heights 11/19 06Z (0446): No radar consensus 11/19 12Z (1039): No radar consensus 11/19 18Z (1700): No radar consensus 11/20 00Z (2248): No radar consensus 11/20 00Z (2340): No radar consensus PROFILER DATA: Winds may be severly effected by the large swells if the stable platform does not keep up. Low mode: typically to 1.8 to 2.6 km. Data after 0Z 11/19 is poor and often missing probably caused by missing/wrong SCS input. Clutter effects visible to 600 m. High mode: typically to 2.8 km. Data after 0Z 11/19 is poor and often missing probably caused by missing/wrong SCS input. Clutter effects visible to 0.5 or 1.0 km. RASS: profiles generally to 400-800 m. Poor coverage (high relative wind?) from 12Z-24Z 11/18. SOUNDING COMMENTS: NOTE: Several soundings have questionable winds below 700m. This may be caused by using an unrealistic surface wind point when the SCS correction fails. NOTE: Several soundings have several points near sfc with false high T, Td; probably due to necessary delay between data aquisition and true launch. 11/17 12Z (1047): good flight; sfc T high, very strong westerlies aloft 11/17 18Z (1657): good flight; sfc T high 11/18 00Z (????): described in tklog but no file transferred? 11/18 06Z (0448): good flight; winds look unrealistic below 700 m 11/18 12Z (1102): failed flight, no data 11/18 12Z (1127): good flight; very dry above 3.3 km 11/19 06Z (0446): good flight; inversion at 1.4km 11/19 12Z (1039): good T, Td; inversion at 2.2; winds look ragged all hts 11/19 18Z (1700): good flight; drying at 1.4km; winds biased below 700 m 11/20 00Z (2248): good flight; inversion at 1.2 km; burst at 7.5km; wind above 4 km bad. 11/20 00Z (2340): good flight; inversion at 1.3 km; no wind below 500m SITE LOG INFORMATION: Some soundings skipped due to very rough seas. Activity on deck is restricted during severe sea conditions. RASS shrouds were re-secured for two port speakers. No RASS from 0200Z to 0240Z 11/19 11/18 00Z -- The 15 degree limit of the stable platform is exceeded in rough seas, and it is expected to get worse. No fix to this one. 11/20 02:15 -- Problems with the SCS reportedly now fixed. Problem due to parsing on ET's side. Prior radar data is questionable. ################################### ACE - CAPE GRIMM: (ISS4) ----------------- Data summary 11/17 14Z through 11/21 02Z GENERAL: Current status: Profiler/RASS inop; Radiosondes working; Sfc thermo/gauge working, sfc speed/direction inop SURFACE DATA: All sensors good except anemometer. Appears to be down during 0930Z 11/20 to 02Z 11/21 (maybe fixed as of 02:30Z 11/21) Interesting wind direction shifts. From about 200 deg starting 14Z 11/17 Then slowly rotates to 50 deg between 12Z and 23Z 11/18 Then rotates to 200 at 0130 11/19 Then rotates abck to 50 at 10Z 11/19 Probably an effect of the local topography. Small temperature drop 23Z 11/21 coincides with rain SOUNDING - PROFILER WIND COMPARISON: No profiler winds or temperatures available PROFILER DATA: Profiler still inoperative. Replacement parts on the way. SOUNDING COMMENTS: Many of the soundings have missing or questionable winds at a variety of altitudes. Sometimes oscillating suggests interference from nearby Omega station. 11/17 12Z (1115): good flight; wind missing below 1 km, inversion near sfc 11/17 18Z (1721): good flight; ragged wind at various hts, inversion 800m 11/18 00Z (2357): good flight; inversion/drying at 1.2 km 11/18 06Z (0500): scattered, poor winds, drying near 2.1 km 11/18 12Z (1100): fair flight; no wind 5-6km, ragged elsewhere, inversion 1km 11/18 18Z (1731): good thermo; winds oscillate 11/19 00Z (2312): good flight 11/19 06Z (0500): winds oscillating and ragged 11/19 12Z (1101): winds oscillating and ragged 11/19 18Z (1712): some good winds, some oscillating and ragged 11/20 00Z (????): missing file 11/20 06Z (0500): missing wind 7-14 km; inversion/drying 1.6 km 11/20 12Z (1051): good flight; small wind oscillations but generally good 11/20 18Z (1713): some ragged winds 11/21 00Z (2300): good flight; good winds. SITE LOG INFORMATION: (summary of relevant TKLOG entries) Profiler problem being worked on - replacement parts on the way Sometimes poor or missing winds for 06Z ascents even with "green" nav status 10Z 11/20: Surface station wind speed and direction may be wrong. Young prop broken. Will be looked at in daylight. ########################################################################### NOAA DISCOVERER ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 324 ############## NOAA DISCOVERER ################ ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/20/1995 -- 4/2 total prof915l ---- 11/20/1995 - 48/48 total prof915h ---- 11/20/1995 - 48/48 total rass915 ----- 11/20/1995 - 48/48 total surface_met - 11/20/1995 -- 2/2 ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- CAPE GRIMM ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 324 ############### CAPE GRIMM ################# ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/20/1995 -- 4/2 total prof915l ---- 11/20/1995 - 0/48 total prof915h ---- 11/20/1995 - 0/48 total rass915 ----- 11/20/1995 - 0/48 total surface_met - 11/20/1995 -- 1/2 ------------------------------------- -------------------------------------
