################################### ACE ISS PRODUCT LOG Prepared by: Steve Cohn ################################### ACE - NOAA DISCOVERER: (ISS1) ---------------------- Data summary 11/20 02Z through 11/21 03Z GENERAL: Calmer seas; SCS sometimes broken. This is hard to determine from the transferred data. The surface and profiler wind speed/direction will be wrong during these outages. SURFACE DATA: Good T, RH, P, gauge. Cannot evaluate wind speed/dir measurement. Temperature: very steady, 6-10 C (overcast) Winds: change between two modes, which could be caused by the ship altering speed (stopped for a CTD?) or by the intermittant SCS speed/course correction. SOUNDING - PROFILER COMPARISON: RASS generally parallel to and slightly warmer than sonde, consistent with virtual temperature Profiler wind directions when "good" is often about 20 degrees too small (rotated counter-clockwise) (note direction of errors assume class is correct and refer to radar data) 11/20 06Z (0459): Low mode: poor below 700m, above within 15 deg, 0-3 m/s high High mode: same as Low 11/20 12Z (1052): Low mode: speed always hi 3-10 m/s, dir within 50 deg High mode: same as low 11/20 18Z (1706): Low mode: speed fair agreement, direction off by 150 deg High mode: speed low by 4 m/s, direction way off 11/21 00Z (2300): Low mode: above 800m dir within 30 deg, speed 2-5 m/s low High mode: diretion within 20 deg, speed about 3 m/s hi PROFILER DATA: Winds may be severly effected by the large swells if the stable platform does not keep up. Winds will be wrong during periods when the SCS-based correction for ship's motion fails. Low mode: typically to 1.5 to 1.8 km. Character of data changes abruptly, perhaps indicating an SCS or platform problem. High mode: typically to 2.2 to 3.0 km.Character of data changes abruptly, perhaps indicating an SCS or platform problem. RASS: profiles generally to 600-1100 m. Good coverage, has the relative wind slowed? SOUNDING COMMENTS: NOTE: Several soundings have questionable winds below 700m. This may be caused by using an unrealistic surface wind point when the SCS correction fails. NOTE: A few sounding have oscillations in u,v 11/20 06Z (0459): good flt; check winds below 700 m biased; inversion 1.3 km 11/20 12Z (1052): good flt; jump in wind at 2 km; inversion 1.3 km 11/20 18Z (1706): good flt; check winds below 700 m biased; inversion 1.5 km 11/21 00Z (2300): good flt; inversion 1.5 km SITE LOG INFORMATION: Some problems with SCS data persist. ################################### ACE - CAPE GRIMM: (ISS4) ----------------- Data summary 11/21 02Z through 11/21 14Z GENERAL: Current status: Profiler/RASS inop; Radiosondes working; Sfc thermo/gauge/rad working, sfc speed/direction inop SURFACE DATA: Sensors look good except anemometer. Wind speed: reading 0 m/s; direction may be ok. RH: good except for sudden unrealistic drying for about 45 min (12-13Z 11/21) SOUNDING - PROFILER WIND COMPARISON: No profiler winds or temperatures available PROFILER DATA: Profiler still inoperative. Replacement parts on the way. SOUNDING COMMENTS: 11/21 06Z (????): file not avaliable (not transferred?) 11/21 12Z (1130): good flight; T, Td good; winds in&out 500-3000m, else good. SITE LOG INFORMATION: (summary of relevant TKLOG entries) Profiler problem being worked on - replacement parts on the way. Surface prop/vane problem being worked on. Continued games of hide-and-seek with Omega lock; usually wins. ########################################################################### NOAA DISCOVERER ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 324 ############## NOAA DISCOVERER ################ ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/20/1995 -- 4/4 total prof915l ---- 11/20/1995 - 48/48 total prof915h ---- 11/20/1995 - 48/48 total rass915 ----- 11/20/1995 - 48/48 total surface_met - 11/20/1995 -- 2/2 ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- CAPE GRIMM ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 324 ############### CAPE GRIMM ################# ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/20/1995 -- 4/4 total prof915l ---- 11/20/1995 - 0/48 total prof915h ---- 11/20/1995 - 0/48 total rass915 ----- 11/20/1995 - 0/48 total surface_met - 11/20/1995 -- 1/2 ------------------------------------- -------------------------------------
