################################### ACE ISS PRODUCT LOG Prepared by: Steve Cohn ################################### ACE - NOAA DISCOVERER: (ISS1) ---------------------- Data summary 11/21 03Z through 11/22 05Z GENERAL: Sometimes calmer seas; Surface wind sensor may have problem related to intermittant SCS correction. SURFACE DATA: Good T, RH, P, gauge, rad. Not sure about wind speed/dir Temperature: very steady, 8-10 C Winds: some surprising jumps in wind speed; eg 09-11Z 11/21, 23Z 11/21. Could be bad input when correcting for ship's motion. SOUNDING - PROFILER COMPARISON: RASS good. Parallel to and slightly warmer than sonde. Profiler wind directions when "good" is often about 20-30 degrees too small (rotated counter-clockwise) (note direction of errors assume class is correct and refer to radar data) 11/21 06Z (0515): No profiler consensus for comaparison 11/21 12Z (1054): Low mode: speed poor 0-600m, within 2 m/s 0.6-1.8km, poor 1.8-2.5km; dir poor 0-600m, 30 deg low 0.6-1.8km, poor above 1.8km High mode: speed low 2-5m/s; dir poor 11/21 18Z (1658): Low mode: speed high 3-8 m/s; dir poor agreement High mode: speed high 10 m/s below 1km, 3 m/s above, dir not very close 11/22 00Z (2304): Low mode: speed high below 1km, 1m/s 1.0-1.5km; dir 20 deg low 400-1500m High mode: speed within 3 m/s below 1.3 km, 6 m/s low above; dir about 30 degrees low PROFILER DATA: Winds may be severly effected by the large swells if the stable platform does not keep up. Winds will be wrong during periods when the SCS-based correction for ship's motion fails. Low mode: typically to 1.6 to 2.2 km. Character of data changes abruptly, perhaps indicating an SCS or platform problem. High mode: typically to 2.5 to 3.5 km. Character of data changes abruptly, perhaps indicating an SCS or platform problem. RASS: profiles generally to 400-1200 m. Good coverage. SOUNDING COMMENTS: NOTE: Several soundings have questionable winds below 700m. This may be caused by using an unrealistic surface wind point when the SCS correction fails. 11/21 06Z (0515): good flt; sfc T high; inversion 1.8 km; check winds below 2 km 11/21 12Z (1054): good flt; bias winds below 1 km? 11/21 18Z (1658): good flt; bias winds below 1 km? 11/22 00Z (2304): good flt; sfc T high; biased wind below 700 m? SITE LOG INFORMATION: Operators note Campbell wind speed inconsistent: "sometimes it is close to ships anemometers, sometimes it is rediculously high, not sure why, but i will investigate tommorrow" ################################### ACE - CAPE GRIMM: (ISS4) ----------------- Data summary 11/21 14Z through 11/22 14Z GENERAL: Current status: Profiler/RASS WORKING; Radiosondes working; Sfc thermo/gauge/rad working, sfc speed inop; sfc direction probably ok. SURFACE DATA: All sensors look good except anemometer. Wind speed: No speed (broken); direction reportdly within 3 degrees of Cape Grimm station sensor. SOUNDING - PROFILER WIND COMPARISON: RASS good. Parallel to and slightly warmer than sonde. Profiler wind directions when "good" is often about 20-30 degrees too small (rotated counter-clockwise) (note direction of errors assume class is correct and refer to radar data) 11/21 18Z (1708): No profiler data 11/22 00Z (2301): No profiler data 11/22 06Z (0500): Speed 3 m/s high below 600m, very close above (to 2km) Dir about 10 deg low, better above 1.5km 11/22 12Z (1059): Speed within 3 m/s, Direction within 10 deg except below 500m PROFILER DATA: Profiler data looks very clean. No evidence of ground clutter in either mode. Profiler high mode and low mode winds agree very well. Low mode: typically to 2.0 to 3.0 km. Good time-height consistency High mode: typically to 3.5 to 4.5 km. RASS: profiles generally to 600-800 m. SOUNDING COMMENTS: 11/21 18Z (1708): good flt; some missing wind 1-2 km 11/22 00Z (2301): good flight, good winds and T, inv 1.7 km 11/22 06Z (0500): good flight good winds and thermo 11/22 12Z (1059): good flight; good winds and thermo SITE LOG INFORMATION: (summary of relevant TKLOG entries) Wind profiler back on the air at 03Z 11/22 - looks good! Surface prop/vane problem (broken rooster): waiting for parts ########################################################################### NOAA DISCOVERER ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 325 ############## NOAA DISCOVERER ################ ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/21/1995 -- 4/4 total prof915l ---- 11/21/1995 - 48/48 total prof915h ---- 11/21/1995 - 48/48 total rass915 ----- 11/21/1995 - 48/48 total surface_met - 11/21/1995 -- 2/2 ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- CAPE GRIMM ISS SITE LOG -- Julian Day 325 ############### CAPE GRIMM ################# ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- total class ------- 11/21/1995 -- 4/4 total prof915l ---- 11/21/1995 - 0/48 total prof915h ---- 11/21/1995 - 0/48 total rass915 ----- 11/21/1995 - 0/48 total surface_met - 11/21/1995 -- 1/2 ------------------------------------- -------------------------------------
