Winds 290 degrees at 15 m/s, pressure 995.3 and rising, partly
cloudy, dry bulb 12.5C, wet bulb 10.0C seawater 12.2C. A front passed
the ship at 1600. Showers persisted for about 1.5 hours. The skies are now
clearing.
SEA STATE:
Northwesterly 3-4 M swell/waves
INSTRUMENTS/SYSTEMS STATUS
Sea Surface Measurements:
DMS:
Concentrations are rising. We measured 2.8 nM DMS at station P1 (42N,
140E), nothering earth schattering but at least it is not the winter low
values.
DMSP/DMSO:
Samples collected every 8 hours for particulate and dissolved DMSP and
DMSO. Dissolved DMSPconcentrations are about 5 nM, particulate DMSP
about 15 nM. Incubation from 11/22 showed 14 hour turnover time for
DMSP. Another incubation experiment is in progress
NMHC:
Butane ~2ppb; Pentane ~0.3ppb in equilibrated air samples.
CO2:
Nitrate/Chlorophyll:
Nitrate concentrations are approximately 1 uM. Seawater
fluorescence is being recorded continuously. Surface seawater
samples are being collected every 4 hours for discrete chlorophyll analysis.
Atmospheric Measurements:
DMS:
SO2:
Concentrations increased from ~5 to ~200 ppt at ~1200 then dropped
back down to ~30ppt. Concentrations approximately 5-10 ppt.
NH3:
Using oxalic acid coated filters. Concentrations measured with oxalic
acid coated filters range from 3 to 10 pptv.
CO:
Concenctrations near 60ppb.
NMHC:
Butane ~100ppt; Pentane ~10ppt
O3:
Concentrations are approx 25 ppb.
Nitrogen oxides and PAN:
NO2 system not operational.

Aerosol physics:

UFCN = 500, CN = 450 pp/cc
Aerosol chemistry:
2-stage and 7-stage impactors currently sampling for time
periods ranging from 24 to 72 hours for IC, total organic carbon, speciated
organics, and gravimetric analysis.

ISS Status and Schedule:
System operational with 4 sondes/day.
Routine Weather Observations: Going well.
Satellite Observations: None
CTD Cast Schedule: Cast scheduled at station P1 at 2200.
SPECIAL PLANNED OBSERVATIONS (NEXT 24-HOURS):
Transit eastward towards Cape Grim. Hold station (GC1) 20 nm from
Cape. We would like to stay here several days for air sampling.
PAST 24-HR OPERATIONS SUMMARY:
Conducted surface seawater and air sampling along Southern Surveyor
cruise track to the west of Tasmania.
