Data summary 11/27 00Z through 11/28 00Z

GENERAL: Surface wind sensor may have problem related to intermittant SCS correction.

SURFACE DATA: Good T, RH, P, gauge, rad. Not sure about wind speed/dir

Winds: some jumps in wind speed continue to occur (e.g. 11/27 0730Z, 1330Z).
Could be bad SCS input correcting for ship's motion.

SOUNDING - PROFILER COMPARISON:

RASS good. Parallel to and slightly warmer than sonde.

Comparison of low and high mode profiler wind speed and direction to that of CLASS sounding.

11/27 06Z (0500): Low mode: speed within 2 m/s. Good agreement.
		  High mode: speed within 4 m/s.
		  Direction good (both modes) - within 20 deg. above 800m. Poor below.
11/27 12Z (1100): Low mode: speed poor sfc - 2000m; within 2-4 m/s above.
		  High mode: within 4 m/s.
		  Direction good (both modes) - within 20-30 deg. above 500m. Poor below.
11/27 18Z (1657): No profiler data available.
11/28 00Z (2305): Speed: Both modes bad below 800m. High mode within 2-3 m/s above.
                  Low mode within 1 m/s above.
		  Direction good (both modes) - within 40 deg. at sfc to within 20 deg.
		  at 3000m.

PROFILER DATA:

The profiler was inoperative from roughly 1300Z until 2300Z 11/27 due to a
blown fuse.

Low mode: typically to 2.0 to 4.5 km. 
High mode: typically to 3.0 to 8.0 km. 
RASS: profiles generally to 400-1200 m.

SOUNDING COMMENTS:

11/27 06Z (0500): Very Good flt.
11/27 12Z (1100): Good flt; Questionable T,Td data 950mb -> 870mb.
11/27 18Z (1657): Good flt; Some noise at higher levels.
11/28 00Z (2305): Good flt; Moist 950 - 750mb. Evaporative cooling in T sensor near 750 mb.
                  Near sfc winds questionable.

SURFACE DATA:

All sensors look good. Anemometer replaced at 0100Z 11/28.


SOUNDING - PROFILER WIND COMPARISON:

RASS good. Parallel to and slightly warmer than sonde.

Comparison of low and high mode profiler wind speed and direction to that of CLASS sounding.

11/28 00Z (2306): Speed within 2-4 m/s throughout (both modes).
		  Direction: Very good agreement throughout - within 10 - 20 deg.
11/28 02Z (0204): Speed within 2-4 m/s throughout (both modes).	
		  Direction: Very good agreement throughout - within 10 - 20 deg.
11/28 06Z (0500): Speed within 2-4 m/s throughout (both modes).
		  Direction: generally good agreement below 2.0km (both modes).
11/28 12Z (1100): Speed within 2-4 m/s throughout (both modes). A couple
		  bad profiler points above 2.5km.
		  Direction within 20 deg. or less below 2.0km.

PROFILER DATA:

Profiler was down from roughly 1500Z until 1700Z 11/27.

Low mode: typically to 2.5 to 4.5 km. 
High mode: In high wind situation up to 9.0 km.
RASS: profiles generally to 600-1200 m.

SOUNDING COMMENTS:

11/28 00Z (2306): Noise, at times, in T,Td data (will clean up in re-processing).
		  Otherwise, good sounding. Lost data above 150mb.
11/28 02Z (0204): Some noise (will clean up in re-processing) in T,Td data. 
		  Otherwise, good sounding.
11/28 06Z (0500): Good flight; Some Omega signal loss (missing winds) above 150mb.
11/28 12Z (1100): Very good sounding.

SITE LOG INFORMATION:

Surface prop/vane replaced 0100Z 11/28.
