SEA STATE:
Southwesterly 1-2 M swell, wind waves from 170 at <1 M
INSTRUMENTS/SYSTEMS STATUS
Sea Surface Measurements:
DMS: Current concentration 4nM
DMSP/DMSO:
NH4+NH3/pH:
CO:
Surface seawater concentrations have a diurnal cycle with a late night
minimum of 0.8 and and an afternoon maximum of 1.8 nM.
NMHC:
Low ppb levels of butane. sub ppb levels of pentane in equilibrated air
samples.
CO2:
Nitrate/Chlorophyll:
Nitrate concentrations are approx 0.1 uM.
Seawater fluorescence is being recorded continuously.
Surface seawater samples are being collected every 4 hours
for discrete chlorophyll analysis.
Atmospheric Measurements:
DMS:
SO2:
No measurements due to winds abaft the beam.
NH3:
Using oxalic acid coated filters. Concentrations measured with oxalic
acid coated filters range from 3 to 10 pptv.
CO:
Concentrations near 60ppb.
NMHC:
ppt levels of a few hydrocarbons. very clean air.
O3:
Concentrations range from 18-24 ppb.
An ozonesonde was launched at 0330. Between the surface and 3.5km
concentrations ranged from 18 to 25 ppb, between 3.5 and 7.5km
concentrations ranged from 30 to 70 ppb. Concentration increased with
height rapidly above 7.5 km.
Nitrogen oxides and PAN:
NO increasing after local noon to ~8ppt then decreasing to ~4 ppt
NO2 decreased from ~16 to ~8 ppt through out the day.
NOy ~500 ppt., PAN not functional.

Aerosol physics:
At 0600 the size distribution shows strong 30nm and 100nm modes,
and a weak 12-14nm mode. UFCN = 600-700 pp/cc.
Aerosol chemistry:
2-stage and 7-stage impactors currently sampling for time periods
ranging from 24 to 72 hours for IC, total organic carbon, speciated
organics, and gravimetric analysis.
For 328.998 to 330.023 (GMT) while the airplane was in the
vicinity of the Discoverer, subum nss SO4 and NH4 conc were
0.15 and 0.036 ug/m3.
From 335.287 to 336.929 prior to the start of the first lagrangian,
subum nss SO4 and NH4 conc were 0.103 and 0.028 ug/m3.
From 335.555 to 335.893 (1st 6 hr of the smart balloon flight)
sub and superum MSA conc were 0.019 and 0.025 ug/m3.
From 336.144 to 336.929, sub and superum MSA conc were 0.026
and 0.024 ug/m3.
Aerosol optical properties: Absorption

ISS Status and Schedule:
System operational with 8 sondes/day.
Routine Weather Observations: Going well.
Satellite Observations: None
CTD Cast Schedule: None.
SPECIAL PLANNED OBSERVATIONS (NEXT 24-HOURS):
Continue observations of diurnal cycles in area of high pressure system and
survey of seawater DMS concentrations in region.
PAST 24-HR OPERATIONS SUMMARY:
Discover headed north yesterday keeping winds foward of the beam for air
sampling. At approximately 42S we crossed a oceanic front into a region of
low nitrate (approximately 0.1 uM) and higher DMS concentrations
(4-5 nM).
