1999 PEM-TROPICS B SATELLITE IMAGES In this directory, there are twelve (12) text files containing listings of the available 3-hourly, 4-km resolution, full-disk satellite imagery in McIDAS format collected during the 1999 PEM-Tropics B field mission. The names of the twelve (12) text files are as follows: FILE NAME SATELLITE LISTING EXAMPLE McIDAS FILE NAME ------------ --------------------- -------------------------- gms5ir.txt GMS-5 Infrared GM5-199903051233.ir1.ara.Z gms5vis.txt GMS-5 Visible GM5-199903051233.vis.ara.Z gms5wv.txt GMS-5 Water Vapor GM5-199903050632.ir3.ara.Z goes10ir.txt GOES-10 Infrared G10-199903060000.ir4.ara.Z goes10vis.txt GOES-10 Visible G10-199903060000.vis.ara.Z goes10wv.txt GOES-10 Water Vapor G10-199903060000.ir3.ara.Z goes8ir.txt GOES-8 Infrared G8-199903052044.ir4.ara.Z goes8vis.txt GOES-8 Visible G8-199903052044.vis.ara.Z goes8wv.txt GOES-8 Water Vapor G8-199903032044.ir3.ara.Z metsat7ir.txt METEOSAT-7 Infrared ME7-199903050600.ir1.ara.Z metsat7vis.txt METEOSAT-7 Visible ME7-199903050600.vis.ara.Z metsat7wv.txt METEOSAT-7 Water Vapor ME7-199903050030.ir2.ara.Z There are a lapses in the McIDAS satellite imagery coverage during some days of the PEM-Tropics B mission due to communication problems between NASA Langley Research Center and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center where the McIDAS files were being generated. The GTE Project Office may obtain some of these missing files via purchase through the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin - Madison if the missing files are deemed important to a specific research flight. It is planned that a set of GOES-8, GOES-10, or GMS-5 visible, infrared, and water vapor images with flight tracks, continent outlines, and latitude/ longitude grids for each flight of the DC-8 and P3-B will eventually be listed and available before the Data Workshop in October, 1999. Due to the large size of the McIDAS files, it is not feasible to store them in the GTE Archive. Therefore, access to the McIDAS satellite imagery must be made by contacting David Westberg by email at d.j.westberg@larc.nasa.gov or phone at (757) 864-5616. Mr. Westberg can either send the McIDAS file via ftp or produce an image upon request. McIDAS software is needed to view these satellite images. PLEASE NOTE: Users of these data should acknowledge the contributions made by the University of Hawaii and NASA in providing these data to the public [ftp://geo.msfc.nasa.gov/Weather/].
