TITLE OF INVESTIGATION: ANALYSIS OF ASIAN OUTFLOW OVER THE WESTERN PACIFIC USING OBSERVATIONS FROM TRACE-P

INVESTIGATORS: Daniel J. Jacob (P.I.), Jennifer A. Logan (Co-I.), Isabelle Bey, Hongyu Liu (Division of Engineering & Applied Science, Harvard University), Celine Mari (Laboratoire d’Aerologie, CNRS, Toulouse, France)

DELIVERABLES.

Mission scientist. Jacob will serve as mission scientist for TRACE-P.

• Pre-mission 3-D global tropospheric chemistry simulations with the GEOS-CHEM
model.
We will conduct global simulations with Feb-Apr 1994 meteorology from the
GEOS-1 assimilation and present results at the first Science Team meeting. An earlier
simulation with Feb-Apr 1994 meteorology has been evaluated with observations from the
PEM-West(B) mission. The simulation to be conducted for TRACE-P will have higher
horizontal resolution (2
o x2.5 o ) and will separate CO and ozone tracers from different source
regions.

Chemical forecasts during the mission using the GEOS-CHEM global 3-D model and
the Meso-NH mesoscale chemical tracer model.
Forecast meteorological fields will be
from GEOS-3 (2
o x2.5 o resolution) for the global model and from Meso-NH for the
mesoscale model. The Meso-NH simulations will be done by the Laboratoire d’Aerosologie
in Toulouse. Forecast chemical fields will be posted on the web and will include CO, ozone,
and NO
y tracers from different sources and source regions.

Post-mission 0-D photochemical model analyses of fast chemical processes controlling
HO
x , NO x , and ozone concentrations along the aircraft flight tracks.

Post-mission interpretation of the aircraft observations in terms of contributions from
different anthropogenic, biogenic, and biomass burning source regions to Asian
outflow.
We will place the aircraft observations in the context of concurrent observations
from satellites (GOME, MOPITT, TOMS) and from ozonesondes, and conduct statistical
analyses of the aircraft observations using chemical correlations and meteorological
information (e.g., from backtrajectories). This work will focus on ozone, greenhouse gases,
and related species.

Quantitative estimates of the contributions from different source regions to Asian
chemical outflow using the GEOS-CHEM global 3-D model.
This work will attempt to
bring together the aircraft, satellite, and sonde observations in a comprehensive and
quantitative analysis of Asian outflow. It will focus on ozone and related species. It is
supported by NASA/ACMAP.
