Tracer Transport during TRACE-P: Flight Planning and Interpretation
with Satellite Maps, Ozone Profiles and Trajectory-based Analysis Tools.

We will provide tools for focused flight planning, based on those employed successfully during SONEX and PEM-Tropics B
[Thompson et al., JGR(105), 3595ff, 2000]. These include daily tropospheric ozone maps, satellite imagery, forecast
trajectories, and trajectory-based model products showing influences of dust, smoke and aviation emissions on the TRACE-P
sampling region at flight level [Meijer et al., JGR(105), 3833ff, 2000]. All imagery and model plots will be sent by ftp to the
field and posted simultaneously on our team’s website. Ozone validation of the new TOMS- based maps will be performed
with TRACE-P aircraft and ozonesonde data [Thompson and Hudson, JGR(104), 2696ff, 1999; Frolov et. al., 2000].

Two types of post-mission analyses will be performed:

1. Determination of ozone and other tracer origins using remote sensing data and trajectory-based products.
Emphasis will be on evaluating the impact of biomass burning and deep convection on ozone sampled from Hong
Kong and Guam. Remote sensing (TOMS, ISCCP, GMS, SeaWIFS) show convection and biomass burning to
be important in the February-April months.

2. Tropospheric ozone satellite data (MR-TTO, TDOT) will be evaluated, reprocessed if necessary and distributed.
